The Land

Geographical situation.
The guarantee of origin Empordà-Costa Brava is a region which is situated at the extreme north-east of Catalunya and it is limited in the north by the Pyrenees, the south by the Gavarres, the west by the Transversal mountain range and the east by the Mediterranean sea.

With a total surface of 1973 km2 of which 1273 belong to the Alt (High) Empordà and the rest (700) to the Baix (Low) Empordà. Of the total surface only 30,62 km2 are dedicated to the cultivation of vineyard and nowadays there are 2470 hectares registered in the guarantee of origin.

Characteristics of climate and soil  
The soil is light, of good permeability and with a neutral-acid-ph.
The most characteristic climatological element is the Tramontana (north-wind) which not only dries up the crop but also it is terrible because of its strength, able to destroy plants and sown fields.
The winters are mild and it hardly freezes and the summer is warm, softened by the sea breeze. Spring is short with sudden temperature changes. Autumn is calm and long, with mils temperatures.
The rain gauge average of the region of Empordà is 691mm/year.

Particular characteristics of Castell de Biart
The plots are in the Pla de Biart, on an earthy-clay soil with broken stone and a quaternary alluvial subsoil from the river Llobregat.
